Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
